Heeraben Modi, 100-year-old Matriarch of the Modi Family, Passes Away

Heeraben Modi, mother of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, passed away early on Friday in an Ahmedabad hospital.

Her death was announced in a bulletin from the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre, where she was taken on Wednesday as her condition began to decline.

PM Modi arrived in Ahmedabad on Wednesday afternoon from Delhi and met his mother in the hospital. He had been in the hospital, a government-funded autonomous medical facility, for more than an hour and had also spoken to several of the doctors there.

Hiraba, who turned 100 on June 18, 1923, is survived by her five sons — Somabhai, Amritbhai, Narendra, Prahlad, and Pankaj — and one daughter, Vasantiben.

She was born in Visnagar, in the Mehsana district, and spent much of her life with limited financial resources.

 

Hiraba lived in Raysan village near Gandhinagar, with PM Modi's younger brother Pankaj Modi. During most of his Gujarat visits, the Prime Minister paid frequent visits to Raysan and spent time with his mother.
