PM Justin trudeau attends ceremony to mark Vimy Ridge anniversary.

The Battle of Vimy Ridge has become one of Canada’s most celebrated encounters of the First World War and a supposed “turning point for the Allies” that has been lauded as a nation-building moment for the country.

The 100th anniversary of the battle commemorated on Sunday in both Canada and France to honour the soldiers who fought and died and also to avoid the mythology that has clouded the horrors of Vimy.

Honouring the soldiers, Trudeau said in the ceremony that Canadians who died at Vimy Ridge helped shape Canada into a nation committed to peace.

Trudeau was among the dignitaries to speak at the ceremony at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in northern France, where as many as 25,000 people came to honour the Canadians who died in the fighting.

Canada lost 3,600 soldiers and more than 7,000 were injured during the three-day battle.
