Friends and family say the Muslim family named as the victims of a hit-and-run in London, Ont., on Sunday in what police are calling a hate-motivated attack were strongly involved in the community and committed to their faith. A black truck drove into Salman Afzaal, 46, his wife Madiha Salman, 44, their 15-year-old daughter Yumna Afzaal, and Salman Afzaal's 74-year-old mother as they enjoyed an evening walk.

Family members confirmed the victims' identities to a media channel. Salman Afzaal's mother's name has yet to be confirmed. According to police, the truck driver premeditated the attack and targeted the family because of their Muslim faith. He was captured approximately 10 minutes from the spot the same evening. Fayez, the family's youngest member, survived and was in bad condition at the hospital on Monday.

The assassination of three generations of a Muslim family has shocked Canada and the world. Fayez is a student at the London Islamic School, which is a primary school. Yumna was a Grade 9 student at Oakridge Secondary School after graduating from the London Islamic School last year. Yumna created, drew, and painted a mural in the elementary school's basement, which will now be a part of her legacy, according to school authorities.

On Monday evening, Asad Choudhary, principal of the London Islamic School, spoke to parents at a virtual town hall regarding the mural. " came to this school building and built something wonderful, and when I thanked her, she said, 'I need to thank you because you're giving me an opportunity to leave a legacy for a place I love so much,' Choudhary explained.

Yumna was expected to be asked to be a Grade 10 representative on the Muslim Students Association at Oakridge, according to Hooriya Ansari, the organization's president. "I didn't know her personally, but I was meant to recruit her for next year's term," Ansari explained. "We recognized someone who is a driven leader in her."
