Despite efforts by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) to bring the animal to safety, a moose was discovered dead in a Sault Ste. Marie river on Tuesday. According to Parks Canada, the moose was first spotted in the upper approach of the recreational lock around 7 a.m. ET Tuesday.

Alana Kenopic, Sault Ste. Marie's manager of travel and tourism said she saw the moose in the canal while leading a tour of fishermen out to the Whitefish Island rapids. Other park staff had gathered along the Canadian National Historic Canal site to witness the animal's passage through the locks.

Kenopic claimed she recorded the moose's time in the water on her phone to show her nine-year-old daughter. On the Sault Ste Marie Tourism Facebook page, Kenopic posted a short video of the moose kayaking by the lock. Within hours, the post had received thousands of views.

According to her, this isn't the first time a moose has been sighted kayaking through the lock. Parks Canada personnel assisted a moose pass the lock in 2019, which she described as a "repeat occurrence." Despite the fact that the moose died shortly after the film was shot, Kenopic believes the crew did their best.

"Everyone at the canal was looking out for the moose's best interests." They were just trying to get him to safety as soon as possible, assuming that was the best way to keep him safe.
