Surrey, B.C. – Two young boys  who came to Canada on international student visas are now facing deportation after pleading guilty in connection to a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred in January 2024 in Surrey.

Gaganpreet Singh and Jagdeep Singh admitted to charges including dangerous driving, failing to stop and render assistance, and interfering with a dead body. The charges relate to a disturbing incident on January 27, 2024, when a pedestrian was struck and dragged for over 1.3 kilometres in the 13400-block of 105 Avenue at approximately 1:45 a.m.

During a sentencing hearing held on May 22 in Surrey provincial court, emotional victim impact statements were shared by the family of the deceased. The family described the actions of the two men as dehumanizing, saying their loved one was treated "like a piece of garbage" after being struck and left on the roadside.

Prosecutors emphasized that the gravity of the crime lay not just in the tragic collision itself, but in the response of the accused following the incident. Rather than stopping to help, both individuals made efforts to conceal the victim’s body.

Gaganpreet Singh’s legal counsel, along with the Crown, recommended a joint sentence of three years in prison, a three-year driving ban, and a mandatory DNA order. Similar sentencing considerations are expected for Jagdeep Singh.

The conviction and criminal record mean both men will likely face deportation following the completion of their sentences.
