The educators with ETFO, the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario held the vote for strike action. Around 98% voted in favour of strike action. The union called it an “overwhelming” mandate.
The ETFO said Friday talks with the province of Ontario at the central bargaining table not "meaningful". According to union, be it class size, salary or any other issue, it has become a sticking point in the negotiations.
“While our government has been a reasonable and constructive force at the bargaining table…ETFO has taken another escalating step towards a strike which will disproportionately hurt our kids,” said Premier Doug Ford.
“Strike action caused by unions could mean school closures, disruption, and uncertainty for students and parents.”
In addition to this, high school teachers and teachers in the English Catholic system are also holding strike votes.
It's worth mentioning here that a strike by 55,000 education was averted at the last minute few days ago.
