BRAMPTON, ON – The following is a statement by Mayor Linda Jeffrey:
I want to thank everyone who has been in touch with my office and shared their concerns regarding the disturbing social media videos that have recently gone viral. I want you to know that I share your concerns and that the safety of my residents is my top priority.
Last night, I received a joint letter from our local Brampton MPs, after which I recommended they delegate at today’s Peel Police Services Board meeting, to discuss their concerns related to public safety in our community. They were effective advocates and they expressed their willingness to work together to address this issue in the community.
Since last fall, I have been advocating for additional resources and front-line police officers because of concerns around increasing crime that I had heard from my residents. This morning I had the opportunity to, once again, raise these issues with our Chief of Police, Jennifer Evans, and my Police Board colleagues.
I recommended Chief Evans personally reach out to various media outlets and community meetings to provide details about what actions are being taken to address crime in the City. Chief Evans has committed to increased media availability to address this issue.
You have my assurance that Peel Regional Police are well aware of this issue and are actively addressing our City’s concerns regarding public safety. In the meantime, if you see a situation occurring near you - get to safety - then call the police. Your safety is paramount.
Later today we will be posting a video of the Peel Police Services Board meeting, please take time to watch it and share it with your friends and family.
