An Air India passenger jet carrying over 240 people en route to London crashed into a medical college shortly after takeoff on Thursday in the northwestern city of Ahmedabad, according to officials. It marks one of the deadliest aviation disasters India has seen in decades.
At least one person is reported to have survived, a local hospital doctor told the Press Trust of India, though the Associated Press has not independently confirmed this.
A video circulating on social media shows the jet gradually descending as thick smoke fills the sky. The aircraft reportedly crashed into the mess area of an MBBS training hostel, resulting in multiple injuries.
Sources revealed the passengers included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, 1 Canadian, and 7 Portuguese nationals. Among them were 217 adults and 11 children.
A senior official from the Gujarat health department said DNA tests will be conducted to identify the deceased.
